I was browsing through Facebook today when I saw that several people had posted an article that talks about some low-scale rapper about to have his own television special that follows him, his 10 baby mothers, and his 11 children on the Oxygen channel.
Automatically, my heart sank and I shook my head in complete and utter disgust. It is completely baffling how someone with little to no talent can justifiably sell the idea that exploiting his situation is worth airtime on television. Seriously, who would sign off on this?
Black America needs to wake up and wake up quickly. Seriously.
First, let me talk about the "star" of this upcoming special. The rapper known as Shawty Lo, figured that his little bit of fame warrants him to act a damn fool and go raw dog with every female that looks his way. Additionally, he figured he might get more exposure by allowing cameras to follow him and his "clan" around and show the world just how ratchet, classless, and trifling they can be.
Next, let me talk about his not one, not two, but 10 baby mothers. This in and of itself is a problem. Women can tolerate (to a degree) another woman that lingers in a man's life, mainly because a child is in the picture. Most self-respecting women, however, will not tolerate a man who has MULTIPLE baby mothers. A woman might be able to tolerate the existence of one baby mother and subject herself to being the second. But for a woman to go and allow herself be the third or any sequential baby mother is a disgrace. What makes it even worse is that each woman is proud of having provided this man with offspring. Couple that with the fact that this 36 year old man is now dating a 19 year old woman goes to show these women don't respect themselves.
The reason why Oxygen is even exercising the option of exploiting this family is because the network realizes that RATCHETNESS sells. From "The Real Housewives of" everywhere, to the worthless "Basketball Wives", to the "Bad Girls Club", to "Love & Hip Hop", to any other reality show that promises drama, potential violence, and particularly, Black people at their worst, the ratchetness that these shows provide, coupled with Black America's desire to see it to laugh at it and talk about the same people on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, is why these shows are surprisingly successful. People religiously watch these shows, hoping to see something they probably never would see in their everyday lives (unless they themselves are all about drama and engage in these same shenanigans on a regular basis).
What's even more amazing is that Black America KNOWS this makes them look bad as a whole, and they STILL keep watching it. And then Black America wonders why none of the other ethnic groups can take them seriously, and better yet, stereotypes the WHOLE RACE.
When this television "event" airs on Oxygen in the coming months, Black America will be brought to an all new low. It will show the world that Black America embraces men who can't commit to just one woman or stop procreating when he realizes that his life might get too hectic; that Black America embraces women who don't respect themselves; that Black America primarily is to continue to being the laughingstock of this country; and ultimately, it will show that Black America has no desire to stand united against ratchetness, classlessness, and lack of character, integrity, and dignity.
Come on Black America. Let's rise above this new low.

September 11 - 11 Years Later
It started out like any other day. I was a Senior in high school and I was starting my Philosophy class, a class I took great interest in. The sun was bright and shining. The temperature around that time, in the mid 60s and climbing as the day went along. My colleagues and I were just so excited that after almost 4 years, we'd be leaving high school and moving on to bigger and better things.
Then, in an instant, all that we know, our perception of the world we were in, would be changed forever.
We had heard a member of our class roaming the halls screaming, "They just blew up the World Trade Center!" Thinking it was just a cry for attention, no one paid him any mind. But things got real when a teacher walked in, whispered into my teacher's ear, and we stopped our lesson to watch the news.
The TV in our classroom warmed up and we put in on the first station we could. And there it was. One of the towers of the World Trade Center had smoke coming out of the building. The beautiful New York skyline suddenly had a black, billowing blemish in it. As the reports kept trickling in regarding what had happened, it had been confirmed that a plane had flown into the tower.
As I sat at my desk in awe, I began feeling emotions I never knew before. Well, let me rephrase that: the level of fear I was experiencing was new to me. It was unparalleled. The uncertainty, the shock, the very realization that what was taking place was ACTUALLY taking place, was overwhelming.
As we sat in that classroom, listening to the reports of people in New York, there it was. A second plane flew into the other tower. Unbelievable. A plane flying into the first tower could have been credited to a malfunction on the aircraft or some type of human error. A second plane flying into the same complex though? No coincidence. This was a coordinated attack.
As the unfathomable fear continued to linger, as my eyes could not turn away from the television, there were the reports of the Pentagon being attacked filing in. At this point, no one knew what to make of the situation. Where was the next attack going to take place? Who were these people going after? Why were they doing this? It was at this point that the Towers were beginning to collapse from the sustained damage.
As the day went on, the shift to a new class was underway. My classmates and I quickly rushed to our next classroom to continue witnessing this day of infamy. However, this teacher did not find it productive to "watch television of smoke coming from buildings". And he proceeded with trying to teach us his lesson plan.
Shortly into the lesson, the principal got on the loud speaker, trying his best to calm people's nerves, minimize their fears, and put things into perspective. We eventually got word that we would be leaving to go home that day. All activities were cancelled and the directive was to not linger around the school building.
The directive to leave school came around 11:00AM. I never made it back in front of a television to keep up with what was happening until close to 3:00pm. Traffic was horrible. People's cell phones weren't working. People were moving around the city, scared and unsure as to what was going on.
I watched every bit of coverage I possibly could that day. And even when my eyes tired from fatigue of looking at a screen, I pushed on. I wanted to know every bit of information I could. The awesomeness of the situation was incredible. I knew that on this day, that my life, the lives of my family, friends, and country, would never be the same.
But despite the carnage that took place that day, while I was in awe at the coordinated strike against the United States, I was more in awe of the compassion and humanism that was shown. Complete strangers were running into buildings that had planes fly into them to save other complete strangers. Everyday citizens quickly became humanitarians, makeshift doctors and medics, counselors, and family figures to those who may have been separated from their actual family. The spirit of the people of New York was amazing. And even in the aftermath, the people of New York never wavered in their resolve to pick themselves up from the ashes. Rudy Giuliani, mayor of New York at that time, led the way and the spirit of New York rang out to cities and countries all around the world.
11 years later, New York, and this country, arose from the ashes like a phoenix. The fire of death, destruction, terror, chaos, and anarchy could not overpower the will of people who understood that fear accomplishes nothing. America became stronger in her resolve, started to pursue those who took responsibility, and made it a point that terror achieves nothing.
11 years ago, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives. They are remembered today, and forevermore, by a country who did not waver, did not cave in, did not give up, and stood up as one and united against all who felt that terror would cripple people into submission.
We remember the first responders. We remember the innocents. We remember the brave passengers who crashed in Shanksville. And we remember those who lost their lives in 11 years of fighting to bring those responsible to justice.
We remember. Now, and forevermore.
Then, in an instant, all that we know, our perception of the world we were in, would be changed forever.

So You Don't Want to Vote, Huh?
It's election season and once again, the ads and attacks are out to try and get the people of this fine country to go to the polls and elect them to their sought-after positions. However, there are people in the world who honestly believe that it is OKAY for them not to vote.
Some people choose not to vote because they don't like any of the candidates. Some people choose not to vote because they think politicians don't do things to help the people. There are those who don't vote out of straight ignorance. And there are others who choose not to vote because they feel as if their vote doesn't count or matter. However, I think it is time to dig into each of these reasons and try to determine if not voting because of said reasons is fair, reasonable, or justifiable.
Let's start with those people who don't like any of the candidates. This, in and of itself, is a very understandable sentiment and position. It is the hope of this blog that these people don't like the candidates because of where they stand on issues that are important to them AND NOTHING MORE. I'd rather here someone say, "I don't like (insert politician's name here) because his policies would mess with my money, health care, family, job, retirement, Social Security, etc." I would hate to hear that the reason someone is not voting for a candidate because the candidate comes from a particular background (better off, came from nothing, race, sexual orientation, etc.). If you do not care for a candidate because of their stance on issues, this doesn't mean you shouldn't vote. Throw in a write-in name at the ballot. Make your voice heard that "John Doe" is a better candidate than whoever is actually in the race for the office. It's better for you to vote for "John Doe" than it is for your vote to not be exercised at all.
Let's tackle the people who think politicians don't do things to help the people. Understand just what it is a politician does: a politician makes decisions that effect people on a grand scale. Politicians make decisions that we, individually, cannot make for ourselves. Politicians work together to make certain people's needs are met, that people are safe, that they are entitled to the things that are stated in the Constitution. That is what politicians do. Politicians stand together for what they think is right and fight tooth and nail against things they feel are not right. Politicians don't go into the the political arena expecting everything to be sunshine and rainbows. They expect to do battle against people who have their own constituents needs in mind. Before not voting, look to see what has become of your community with your elected official for your district, city, state, and country. If you see projects being done that weren't there before, that's the work of politicians. If you see children getting new tools to succeed in school, that's the work of politicians. If you don't vote, the things you need for your neighborhood, city, state, and country won't be provided.
Let's address the people who don't vote out of straight ignorance. There are people out there who vote because they like a particular party, or they like to go with the majority or follow their friends and family. These people have not formulated a single opinion about the candidates at all. They have not watched the plethora of political programs that air regularly (I personally like "Meet The Press") that explains the positions of candidates and politicians in office. CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and other stations show regularly scheduled political shows that addresses the viewpoints of people on the left, the people on the right, and the people in the middle. They allow people to learn about where politicians and candidates stand without having to read the bills and laws that are drafted and enacted or having to watch actual sessions of Congressional Meetings, Presidential briefings, or anything that deals with the interviewing people in office. In an age where technology allows people to get access to a wealth of information in a matter of minutes, there is no reason why people can willfully choose not to vote due to a "lack of access" to information.
Finally, let me turn my attention to those who think that their vote doesn't count or matter. It is this perspective that bothers me the most. Each person in this country, in this world, is one voice. However, when one voice links up with another, and another, and another, one voice has grown to several. And when enough voices come together, it causes a mighty roar. With each vote that is cast for a particular candidate, the roar supporting that candidate grows and grows until it becomes overwhelming. However, if each person honestly thought that their vote doesn't help, they are sadly mistaken. The vote you cast, whether for a particular candidate or "John Doe", let's the world know your perspective on issues. Denying yourself your own voice is not only detrimental for you, it's STUPID!
The reasons people don't vote blow me. Especially when the reasons come from minorities and primarily, the African-American community. We must remember that there was a time where people who were not White could not vote and a time where women could not vote either. Just knowing that there are people who marched, fought, were jailed, or even killed for their belief that they have a right to vote. For African-Americans in particular, throwing away the right that those who came before fought so passionately for is a slap in the face to them.
So, honestly, cut the crap. If you honestly believe that your vote doesn't count, won't help you in your everyday life, you don't like a politician or wish to remain in your ignorance, you reserve the stance/perspective. But at the same time, when a politician is in office that threatens your money, your health care, your job, your Social Security, your home, or anything else that you hold dear, you better not dare complain about the situation. You're entitled to vote once every two years. If you fail to make your voice heard during these times, keep your damn mouth shut. Because no one wants to hear someone complain when they had the voice at the time to speak up and make their voice heard.

Does The Art of Courting Still Exist?
Over the past few yearss, I have noticed that that there has been a complete and utter shift in regards to how people approach relationships. People used to want to date and establish meaningful relationships as they strive to achieve the pinnacle of human relationships: marriage. However, people no longer seek to obtain that. Instead, people search for instant gratification and will stop at nothing to obtain it.
People have lowered their standards in regards to the finding a partner. Promiscuity to fulfill the "immediate need" is held in high regard and seeking something worthwhile is frowned upon. Gone are the days where men were gentlemen and sought to win a woman's affection through chivalry, charm, and charisma. Gone are the days when women demanded that men threat them properly in order to continue down a rewarding and happy path.
Ultimately, people have forgotten what it means to care for and love someone. Selfishness has taken the place of selfless and, as such, no one cares anymore.
As social creatures, we long for companionship, but being a hoe or a man-whore is not the answer. A fling, one night stand, or being a friend with benefits is not a long-term solution to filling that empty void we all have. People need to stop being lazy and get back to what matters: finding someone who will fill the void and ultimately make us happy.
Yes, this requires work. Yes this requires trial and error. Yes this requires people to put themselves out there and possibly getting hurt along the way. But if we don't do these things, we will continue to look at people who have lower standards of themselves and potential partners and say that they are winning.
Ladies, let a man take you out and show you a good time. Not every man wants to just sleep with you. There are a number of men who still wants to do things right; dinner, have a conversation, try to make you laugh, will walk you to your car, will want to call to make sure you're okay. But if you keep dealing with the same men that only want to sleep with you and move on, how can you appreciate the good ones that actually show up?
Men, we have to get back to treating women like queens. Open your passenger door when she approaches; open the door as she approaches it; sit with your back to the crowd in the restaurant so that your focus is strictly on her. ENGAGE IN STIMULATING CONVERSATION.
Society may not be about those things, but there are some rare gems that you find if you search hard enough. Don't lower standards for a temporary reprieve. Keep your standards high and demand quality.
That's what courting is all about.

Is Revolution Possible?
In the wake of the Troy Davis story/execution, the 24-48 hours after such an event causes people to sit back and reflect. Questions arise such as, "How could this happen?" and statements such as "Someone needs to do something to prevent this from happening again," always come up.
But by hour 49, the same people who were on the brink of trying to start something fall back to their normal lives and continue about their business.
Which then poses this question: What is the greatest enemy amongst people after an event such as the Troy Davis execution. In short, it's complacency. Allow me to explain.
When people are stuck in their ways and have no desire to be anything great, they grow comlacent. Whether that be in our jobs, in our communities, in our churches, wherever, complaceny is the greatest enemy one ever has to face. So long as people are not challenged, there will never be a need to be more than what you have to be.
This point of view is probably most prevelant in Black America. Not since Dr. King has there been a great revolution amongst Black America. We do not have anyone who pushes the envelope, in today's world, to make Black America more aware of the complacency that surrounds us and keeps us from being more than what we are.
Our people have to stand up for ourselves and demand even more. But in order to do that, we first have to look within and demand more from ourselves. Only after reflecting on ourselves can we begin making the desperate change that Black America needs.
Look at the rest of the world where revolutions have taken place. The revolutions didn't take place right away. The people had to look within first, realize what they deserve, and then, they made a move as a people.
It's time for Black America to do the same.

Justice? What Justice?
We live in a country where we, as a people, believe that people who do wrong against their fellow man get what is due, bringing closure. However, every now and then, there arises a circumstance where this is not the case.
Troy Davis is such as case. Though many did not know him personally, the ordeal he has suffered over the past 22 years is extraordinary. He was convicted in 1991 for the shooting and killing of an off-duty police officer in 1989 based solely off of eyewitness testimony. Though no physical evidence (i.e. the gun) was never found, back then, eyewitness testimony was more than enough to put this man away.
Fast forward to 2011, where more advanced ways of proving a man's innocence are available, and you see that no one wished to review the case by today's standards. And his last measure of hope, his trump card, the U.S. Supreme Court, denied the request for a stay in his execution. There is no doubt that by the time this blog is finished being read, Mr. Davis will have been executed.
But we then look at cases where people who, with overwhelming evidence, committed crimes and have walked away. A case in point being Casey Anthony, who had knowledge her child was missing/dead, and went an extended period of time before reporting anything. And as of this post, a 25 year old woman was set free for killing her newborn twins because she "didn't want her parents to find out she was pregnant".
Clearly, something is wrong with this picture. The justice system frees people who clearly have done wrong, despite the mountain of evidence against them, and punishes greatly those who have a mountain of evidence that proves innocence.
There should be a true uprising in this country for those who truly believe in the term "justice". But as a friend told me, the system is set up the way it is and people must suffer ordeals before SOMEBODY challenges the system. But by then, it is too late.
Troy Davis' situation should alert America that the system is broken and people need to take action. A great cry should arise, demanding that from now on, true justice must be sought after. True justice must be delivered. We must rise up, challenge the status quo, and stand united against those who fail to listen to reason. Justice? What justice?
